ICMA BROADCAST MASS

Picture
On the Sunday following Summer School, Sunday 7 July, members and friends of the ICMA gathered in RTE television studios in Dublin to broadcast the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist. The live Mass was preceded by a pre-recorded clip of Summer School 2013 with an introduction by chairperson Fr Christy Fitzgerald, who also presided at the tv Mass. The event was an opportunity to share the work of the ICMA with a wider audience, to affirm the work and music of Irish composers, and to present a liturgy modelling best liturgical and musical practice. The responsorial psalm was delivered from the ambo in the studio: sound technicalities have previously made this difficult, but Sunday's broadcast showed the eminence of this position for the proclamation of the Word of God. Finally, and most importantly, the event gave the group present the beautiful opportunity to minister to people around the world through prayer, music, and song.

Launch of Here in Christ We Gather: liturgical music book & CD by Ephrem Feeley

Picture
Here in Christ We Gather, a new collection of liturgical music by Meath-based composer Ephrem Feeley, was launched by Archbishop Eamon Martin at the opening ceremony of this year’s Irish Church Music Association Summer School. The fourteen-piece collection includes entrance and communion processionals, psalms, reflective pieces, and more. The book carries the complete music score for the compositions, with full choir parts, instrumental lines, and accompaniments. The accompanying CD features a recording of the collection with chamber choir, instrumentalists, soloists, and organ/piano accompaniment. The handsome collection features striking Scripture-inspired artwork by the Swiss artist Corinne Vonaesch.

Ephrem teaches Music & Religion in St Joseph’s Secondary School, Navan, where he has been instrumental in founding a liturgical music education programme for students. Well-known in liturgical music circles, his music has been published and performed throughout the English-speaking world, and featured throughout last year’s International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin. He and his wife Giovanna regularly give workshops throughout Ireland to liturgical music groups and they are music ministers together in their home parish of Ashbourne-Donaghmore, Co. Meath, and also in Our Lady of Victories, Dublin 9.

Archbishop Martin spoke of the beauty and dignity of the liturgy, in which music plays a key role. ICMA Chairperson Fr Christy Fitzgerald spoke of the Association’s commitment to nurturing and supporting the work of Irish composers, and highlighted the presence of their music in Summer School repertoire over the years and, particularly, this year. Ephrem shared some of the joys and struggles of the compositional process with attendees, emphasising the faith dimension of this work, and its corresponding effect on the faith of those who listen to and pray with this music.

The collection Here in Christ we Gather is available from Veritas bookstores nationwide or from www.cherrybrookmusic.com, and is a welcome addition to the liturgical repertoire of parishes, schools and religious communities, as well as those who wish to enrich their prayer life through music.
