Launch of the Mass of St. Mel, 11 April 2015

The ICMA was delighted to be associated with the launch and promotion of this new Mass by Dr. John O'Keeffe, Director of Sacred Music in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. The launch took place on Saturday April 11th in the reconstructed Cathedral of St. Mel in Longford.

Choirs from the diocese and beyond assembled beforehand for a workshop where they learned the music for the Mass prior to singing it at a wonderful liturgy in the Cathedral. The presider was Rt rev. richard Purcell OCSO and the Organist was Rev. J. Columba McCann OSB.

The Mass of St. Mel seeks to provide viable settings for the congregation of the principal mass parts, and to integrate them within a broader dialogue of sung prayer involving people and priest.Following in the pathways of western chant and native Irish song. it gives musical expression to traditional texts through primarily musical means.
